GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG.
22nd July, 1914.
sir,
27974
With reference to my despatch No.245 of the
9th of July, in which I recommended that quarters should
be erected next year for the subordinate European Officers
in the Railway Department, I have the honour to recommend
that pending the erection of quarters they should receive
house allowances, as the same privilege has been granted to Public Works Department Overseers and Sanitary Inspectors.
2.
In the event, therefore, of your approving
of the erection of the quarters, I would ask for your
sanction to insert in the Estimates for next year allow-
ances not exceeding $30 a month for those officers, who are
not occupying Government quarters, with the exception of the
Chief Accountant in whose case I would recommend an all0w-
ance of $50 a month.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most obedient,
humble servant,
